    State of AI Video Generation in 2026: A Producer's Evaluation Guide

    The AI video space has exploded. Not just in capability, but in fragmentation. Everyone's got a ranking, nobody's ranking for what producers actually need. So let's fix that.

    What's Actually Changed in 2026

    Two years ago, AI video was a party trick. Single shots, 5 seconds, heavy artifacts. Now? The top tier tools are shipping minute-long sequences with character consistency, realistic physics, and enough control that you can actually direct them.

    The shift matters because it's moved from "novelty" to "production tool." That changes what you look for.

    Veo 3.1 and Kling 3.0 are leading the pack on raw output quality. Runway continues iterating on motion control. Seedance (which we use here at SEQNCE) is shipping camera-aware generation and cinematic physics. Sora 2 is solid but behind on availability. The open-source models (Wan 2.6, HaiLuo) are closing the gap faster than anyone expected.

    Why This Matters for Your Workflow

    If you're still thinking of these tools as "click a button, get a video," you're leaving money on the table. The real value isn't in replacing your production crew. It's in accelerating previs, generating style references, building B-roll fast, and testing creative ideas before you commit to a shoot.

    But "testing an idea" looks different for an agency than it does for a YouTuber. You need:

    • Character and object persistence across takes (so you can plan edits)
    • Timeline control (not just prompts, but frame-by-frame direction)
    • Batch generation and queue management (not one video at a time)
    • Export options that play nice with Premiere, After Effects, DaVinci
    • Pricing that scales with volume, not per-click panic

    HOW SEQNCE WILL USE THIS

    We're building a two-tier strategy. Seedance and Veo 3.1 are our workhorses for concept visualization and B-roll generation during brief-to-storyboard. Runway stays in the toolkit for fine-grained motion control when we need to nail specific camera moves or character choreography before we lock shot lists.

    Kling's human generation is legitimately strong, which matters for digital talent and talking-head heavy concepts. We're testing it for ad work where human likeness matters but budget doesn't support a full talent shoot.

    The open-source angle (Higgsfield as a Sora 2 aggregator, local Wan 2.6 for privacy-heavy client work) is on our radar. We're watching closely because the cost-to-quality ratio inverts the economics of short-form content every quarter.

    But here's what we're NOT doing: replacing creative judgment. These tools are force multipliers, not replacements. The prompt quality, the style direction, the edit discipline, still comes from humans. The tool just makes good creative faster.
